Finland Stories # 5: There is no bad weather in Finland, but...

I’ve been visiting Finland regularly since 2020 in my role as artistic director of the UMO Helsinki Jazz Orchestra. One of the things I’ve learned to appreciate about the Finns is their relationship to weather. Because the weather is extreme and often highly unpredictable, at least for a foreigner. The Finns have mastered the art of always being prepared for the worst, while tackling every extreme weather situation with wry humour and dogged determination.

In the Summer of 2021, my wife came to visit Helsinki for the first time. I had been telling her for over a year about the beauty of the city, the wonderful biking and walking paths along the shoreline, the Island of Suomenliina and the Allas Sea Pool. I rented bicycles and told her to bring her bathing suit for what was certain to be a great summer holiday.

Well, mother nature had other ideas. Since then, I have experienced everything from snow in May to sunny bike rides in November, and temperatures from -20 C to 38 C. I’ve learned to enjoy these extremes and always be prepared.

So, my advice for all participants of the 2023 IASJ Jazz Meeting is to definitely pack your sunglasses and bathing suits, but don’t forget to bring your raincoat and a sturdy umbrella.

A famous saying in Finland: “There is no such things as bad weather, only bad clothing”.

I look forward to seeing you all in Helsinki in June!
