Finland Stories # 3: The Iron Curtain
Staying with my Finnish friend Ilari and his family in the summer
cottage near a lake was very beautiful, but a bit boring. Ilari's father asked me if there was something special I would like to see in Finland. 'The frontier with Russia, the iron curtain'. This was not the answer that the father had hoped for. I had to sit on the left site of the car, the iron curtain was on the right side. When he yelled 'dive' I had to hide my head with black curly hair. It was only for a short moment that I could see the iron curtain: a high iron triple-layered fence with watchtowers. In the towers were soldiers with guns pointing at us. Stopping, going out of the car, taking pictures: it was forbidden, and it did not need any explanation.
Back in The Netherlands, I made a drawing of what I had seen and did a presentation during a history lesson. The history teacher, a
retired officer from the Dutch army, gave me a very high mark.
