The 2025 IASJ Jazz Meeting‍ and later — proposals and updates

In the online General Assembly, now planned on Wednesday 3rd of July 2024, you are invited to decide on where and when the next IASJ Jazz Meetings will take place.

Should the 2025 IASJ Jazz Meeting, now planned for the first week of July 2025 in Israel, take place, or is it better to postpone the meeting in Israel to a later year? The IASJ board will offer a suggestion, but the General Assembly takes the decision.

It is expected that Klemens Marktl, head of jazz studies of the jazz department in Klagenfurt, Austria, will make a proposal for an IASJ Jazz Meeting in the fall of 2025 during the upcoming 2024 General Assembly. What do you think? Will you participate?

Be sure that your 2024 IASJ Membership Fee has been paid. If so, you will receive the agenda of the General Assembly soon. According to the IASJ statues, only the representative of a school that has paid the membership fee, can participate and vote in the General Assembly.

The elections to the IASJ board

Elections to the board take place during the General Assembly on Tuesday, 2nd of July 2024. According to the rotation roster, three members of the current board are stepping down.

Is being an IASJ board member a lot of work? Not really. One-hour online board meetings: 3-4 per year. Damani Philips, University of Iowa, USA, has announced to stay for the election.

The next IASJ Executive Director

The Executive Director of the IASJ represents the organization and works together with the Artistic Director and the IASJ Board. The main tasks are finding new members and host schools to organize IASJ Jazz Meetings. The full description of the tasks and responsibilities can be found on the IASJ website:

Ed Partyka, KUG, Graz, Austria, has informed the IASJ Board that he is willing to be the next Executive Director. According to the statutes of the IASJ, the board appoints directors. The choice for the next Executive Director will be made before the 2024 General Assembly.

More activities on 2 and 3 July 2024

Now planned, on the 3rd of July, before the General Assembly, as well as on the 2nd of July, several online presentations take place. Saxophonist Melissa Ardana, see picture above, will address a keynote. If you have ideas or suggestions for presentations concerning jazz performance, jazz education, jazz research or a more general topic, please get in touch.

The IASJ Journal of Applied Jazz Research

Close to 1400 downloads have been made by readers of the articles published in the first volume of the IASJ Research Journal.

Volume 2 will be published in the fall of 2024. The deadline for contributions is 1 July 2024. Do you want your article, research, opinion, interview, or anything that is of practical use, to be read by many readers all over the world? Welcome as well are articles of master or PhD students in which there is a link to jazz performance or jazz education.
